The contamination at the abandoned Technical Metal Finishers property was discovered in June 1982 when a fire occurred at the abandoned plant. The facility contained storage drums filled with acids, caustics, and cyanides. These chemicals were removed by a contractor hired by the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection. After removing the contaminants the building was demolished and, according to the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, the cleanup is now complete. Anecdotal evidence would suggest that the cleanup is not complete and that any future investigation would likely find chlorinated solvents in the soil, soil gas, and groundwater.
