Site Description
The site is located at the corner of Canal and Centre Streets in Manhattan. The site is curently occupied by several mixed commercial/residential buildings. Site operations ceased in 1849 and little is known of the operating history. A Site Characterization was completed which determined that the excavation for the construction of the Canal Street subway station had removed any remanats of this former MGP and a No Further Action determination was made for the site on March 30, 2009. The site will be reclassified to complete and the appropriate release issued to Con Edison for this site.
Site Environmental Assessment
Site operations ceased in 1849 and little is known of the operating history. Based on historical reviews of the site, there is no evidence that there was any production and/or storage of coal gas on the property. The Canal St. subway encompasses a majority of the area underneath the property. The construction of the subway, and subsequent construction of the existing buildings would have removed any soils that would have been present during the MGP era.
Site Health Assessment
NYSDOH has insufficient information to fully evaluate the potential for human exposures.
