The Former Willow Street Service Station is located at 18-02 27th Ave. in Long Island City. The gas station building has been demolished and a commercial/residential building erected in its place. The setting is urban with many residences surrounding the site. Site is approximately 1/4 acre in size. Previously, the Willow Street Service Station was in operation at this location for 30 years. The surrounding community is a mixed residential-commercial area. It is known that the gas station tanks leaked. A Remedial Action Work Plan has been approved and the remedial design is complete. The construction of the remedy is under way.

The primary contaminants of concern are benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, xylene and MTBE. Investigations indicate that the stations tanks were leaking. This has contaminated the subsoils as well as groundwater. Most of the contamination was removed during the excavation for the new building's basement.

The site cleanup has been completed and a commercial-residential building occupies the site. Residual on-site petroleum free product will be recovered using the existing active recovery treatment system. Soil vapor contamination is addressed with the operation of a depressurization system below the slab of the new building. The public is not expected to come in contact with any soil contamination remaining on-site since it is capped and managed with a site management plan. Public water supplies serve area residents from the New York City public water system.
